Andy Cole wants to see "more desire and passion" from Anthony Martial after the striker recorded his first 20 goal season at Manchester United.
The Frenchman and Marcus Rashford are both battling to be the club's top scorer this term.
Martial joined United in 2014 and has always threatened to be a prolific forward, but a lack of consistency has always undermined him.
Cole, who won everything there was to win during his Old Trafford career, has questioned why it has taken the 24-year-old five seasons to break the 20 goal barrier.
With the five-time Premier League winner citing a lack of variety and consistency in his game.
“We all get caught up in the debate about Martial,” he told the Athletic.
“I’m not sure where he wants to play. He’s played well this season as a centre-forward and has scored more goals this season than any other but he should have scored more than 20 in more than one season.
"He came for big money and he’s very talented. He has to show more desire and passion at times. He’s got good feet and a lovely first touch.
"He’s got blistering pace too but you don’t see it enough. He wants the ball to his feet but he should mix it up a bit more.”
United's front three, which also includes Mason Greenwood, have been electric in recent weeks.
Prior to Sunday's loss in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side had not lost since January.
But Cole has highlighted an area where the Red Devils can exploits given the blistering speed they have in attack.
He added: “When Man United pick the ball up in midfield, strikers have come short or go long. Nobody is making the run to get in behind.
"Martial has pace to burn, Marcus too. And it’s the main asset for James. Use it.”
