Anthony Mackie announces he will take over role of Captain America in new Marvel series

Anthony Mackie has officially announced he will be playing Captain America in the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The actor will be reprising his Marvel Cinematic Universe role of Sam Wilson, the character who previously assumed the alter ego “Falcon”.

However, at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Mackie’s character was seen inheriting the title of Captain America from Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans.

In an interview with Shadow and Act, Mackie confirmed the news, saying: “With the idea of being a black man and becoming Captain America, it’s been a daunting task because I think, at this day and age in America, I think we are open-minded to the idea of having my face represent us, as a country.”

“And my race represents us as a country because we’re truly a melting pot. So there is no distinctive look or feel or design of an American”, he continued.

“We’re all Americans... To be Captain America, I want my Captain America to represent everybody, not just a specific group of people.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will follow the adventures of Captain America and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and is scheduled to launch on Disney’s streaming service this August.

Mackie currently stars in the Netflix sci-fi series Altered Carbon.
