There were talks of quarterback Philip Rivers being benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor prior to the Chargers’ loss to the Broncos. Though it never happened, Taylor saw the field for one play.
Little did the team know that it would turn into one of the most head-scratching plays of the afternoon.
Early in the third quarter, Taylor was lined up in shotgun, while Rivers was lined up out wide. Taylor took the direct snap and threw a lateral to Rivers, which was likely to set up a screen on the other side.
But the Broncos weren’t fooled one bit and the Broncos defensive tackle blew up Taylor in the backfield, which forced Rivers to throw the ball into the ground and blow up the play.
On Tuesday, coach Anthony Lynn explained briefly what happened during the play.
“It didn’t work last night because when Tyrod (Taylor) threw the ball, the guy knocked the hell out of him. Those are either outhouse or castle plays. When they work, you’re a genius. When they don’t, you’re an idiot,” Lynn said.
The failed play put the Chargers in a 3rd-and-7 situation. Rivers connected with wide receiver Keenan Allen for an 11-yard gain for the first down. Unfortunately, the drive ended in a punt.
Los Angeles has wanted to put Taylor in for specific plays throughout the season, but they either haven’t been able to follow through with their intentions or the plays haven’t worked.
Sitting at 4-8 with not a whole lot left to gain, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the coaching staff continues to sprinkle Taylor in. If Rivers’ struggles arise, they could opt to let him take over under center completely to see what they have in the 30-year old.
