A body believed to be missing firefighter Anthony Knott has been found in a river, police have said.

Officers recovered the body from the River Ouse, in Newhaven, after being called by a member of the public at around 9.40am.

The body is believed to be that of missing firefighter Mr Knott, who disappeared in Lewes, East Sussex, last month.

Detective Inspector Mark Rosser said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Anthony at this difficult time."

Mr Knott, a father-of-four from Orpigton, in Kent, disappeared on December 20 after an evening with friends at a pub.

He left The Lamb pub in Fisher Street at around 7.16pm and was captured on CCTV around half an hour later walking nearby.

Police began scouring the area around where he was last seen but admitted they had “no indication where he went on the night”.

Sussex Police deployed boats, dogs, drones and helicopters in their three-week effort to find Mr Knott.

After a body was recovered on Friday, the force thanked the public for their "tremendous support in our investigation".
