Anthony Joshua 'wanted to replace trainer' for Andy Ruiz Jr rematch

Anthony Joshua reached out to renowned coach Ismael Salas following his defeat by Andy Ruiz Jr, it has been claimed.

Joshua was dropped four times before he was stopped in the seventh round by Ruiz last month in a seismic heavyweight upset.

The Brit will bid to win back his three world titles later this year and is set to again have Rob McCracken in his corner.

But according to strength and conditioning coach Angel Heredia, Joshua wanted to replace his long-time trainer with Cuban Ismael Salas.

Salas, who is based in Las Vegas, has trained David Haye, Jessie Vargas, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Erislandy Lara during his career.

And Heredia told Hustle Boss: "Me and Salas were very close to sealing a training camp with... we were approached by Joshua, but Salas felt Joshua needed to come to the United States to train, not for us to go to London.

"He reached out to Salas and he reached out to me because he said he would only do it with me.

"That was one of his conditions and the other was for Joshua to come to the United States, not for us to go to London.

"Salas is established in Vegas, he's not going anywhere else.

"[Promoter Eddie Hearn] was very supportive, he thought it was a good idea. A lot of people thought he needed a change, not just in the corner, but in his strength and conditioning.

"Joshua is very athletic but in my opinion he does a lot of exercises that do not let him be as quick as he should be."

Joshua will face Ruiz for a second time at either the Principality Stadium in Cardiff or back at Madison Square Garden in New York with the former the front runner to host the rematch.
