Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury "90 per cent certain" to happen in May

Tyson Fury is 90 per cent likely to head straight into a unification clash with fellow heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua.

Fury had been due to defend his world title this weekend but was unable to agree financial terms to fight behind closed doors.

He will now hope Joshua successfully defends his three belts against mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev next weekend.

If he does, promoter Eddie Hearn is confident a deal can be struck for a unification clash to be held in early summer.

"If we can get the fight done and agreed for May [Fury] won't fight in the meantime," he told Mirror Fighting . "We wouldn't want him to fight and with the undisputed situation with the governing bodies you don't want an interim fight.

"I'm 90 per cent confident; it's the only fight they're looking at, he was going to have a run-out in January or February but I've said to them let's just do it.

"It's the only fight we have in mind, the only other one is Oleksandr Usyk if Fury doesn't fight Joshua but other than a few broadcast bits and pieces which are solvable, it's good to go."

The fight - which could be for all four work titles if Usyk waits his turn for a shot at Joshua, is likely to take place abroad with the Middle East the favourite to play host.

But Joshua has said he is willing to take a pay cut in order to stage the bout at Wembley.

And Hearn added: "Some countries might not be wiling to confidently spend that kind of money to secure a fight; they might want to wait two months for the vaccine and for sport to return.

"It's a big punt to spend that kind of money for May, and that would lend itself to doing it in the UK - we just book it for Wembley and we just do it."
