Anthony Joshua purse from Oleksandr Usyk fight compared to scrapped Tyson Fury mega-bout

Anthony Joshua will defend his heavyweight belts this weekend against Oleksandr Usyk in a fight where he'll pocket considerably less than he planned to in 2021.

The four-belt heavyweight champion was due to clash with Fury in Saudi Arabia on August 8th but those proposals had to be scrapped when an American court ruled that Deontay Wilder could have his rematch with the Gypsy King.

Fury is back in the ring against Wilder in his trilogy bout on October 9th, while Joshua returns to the ring on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

While his purse is set for a 50% increase from his previous fight with Kubrat Pulev in December, the £15m is dwarfed by the earnings he would have earned from a bout with Fury.

Both fighters agreed to a £100m contract for the clash, which was set for an even 50/50 split - with each fighter pocketing £50m.

That figure would have risen significantly from pay-per-view earnings, potentially eclipsing the £66m Joshua earned from his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr.

That fight, in which Joshua secured revenge for the only defeat of his career so far and took back his belts, had the Londoner set for a guaranteed £42m - with the further £24m coming from pay-per-view earnings.

In comparison, Joshua will have a guaranteed £10m from this weekend's fight at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and a further £5m coming from the PPV earnings.

Usyk will pocket a guaranteed £3m, rising to £5m with PPV earnings, which represents the Ukrainian's biggest purse from his career.

Still, both sets of numbers are dwarfed by the potential earnings from a Joshua-Fury bout but the pair can look forward to that payday in 2022, should plans go ahead without a hitch.
