Anthony Joshua knee brace a 'precautionary measure' after 'twinge' felt in training session

Anthony Joshua's use of a leg brace and crutches during a Black Lives Matter protest was a "precautionary measure" following a knee issue sustained in training, it has been confirmed.

The WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO world heavyweight boxing champion attended an anti-racism demonstration in Watford on Saturday.

As well as by delivering a powerful and passionate speech to the crowd in his hometown, Joshua also made headlines after being seen marching on crutches with his left knee in a brace.

That sparked rumours over a potential injury sustained by the 2012 Olympic gold medallist, but fears over anything serious have now been played down after clarification from within the Joshua camp.

"Anthony felt a slight twinge in his knee whilst training," said a spokesperson for Joshua on Saturday evening.

"The brace is a precautionary measure on the advice of physios. It will be further checked by his doctors, but there is no immediate concern."

Joshua regained his heavyweight titles by avenging a shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr with a dominant display in the rematch in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia in December.

The 30-year-old was due to provide the first defence of his second championship reign against IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on June 20, but that fight was postponed in April due to the coronavirus pandemic.
