Anthony Hopkins celebrated 45 years of sobriety on Tuesday (29 December) with a hopeful message to those struggling with alcoholism.
The Oscar-winning star of The Silence of the Lambs posted a video message to Twitter, saying: “45 years ago today, I had a wake-up call. I was heading for disaster drinking myself to death. I got a message, a little thought, that said, ‘Do you want to live or die?’ and I wanted to live.”
Hopkins said he has “off days” and sometimes some “doubt" but encouraged those who are suffering to stay strong.
“Today is the tomorrow you were so worried about yesterday,” Hopkins said. “You young people, just keep in there. Don't give up, just keep fighting, be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.”
He signed off the message saying 2021 will be the “best year”.
Hopkins has a tradition of posting positive videos around New Year. Last January, he shared a clip of himself blowing a kazoo and wishing everyone a “Happy New Year” on behalf of his cat, Niblo.
Hopkins will next be seen alongside Olivia Colman in family drama The Father, which is scheduled for release next month.
