Anthony Elanga sent message to two Manchester United forwards vs Aston Villa

You suspect neither Jadon Sancho nor Marcus Rashford would have had a comfortable night's sleep on Saturday evening.

Both men were sent a warning by the latest Manchester United academy player to rise through the youth ranks and get a deserved spot in the starting 11 in the Premier League, Anthony Elanga.

Of course, the match at Villa Park is not the first time that Elanga has started in the top flight during his United career. Let's not forget he played a full 90 at Wolves in the final game of the 2020/21 season, scoring a fine header.

But the Saturday teatime kick off was the first time he had been given a nod from the start in a fixture that actually mattered.

And he performed as you would expect from someone so well regarded by the academy. The Swedish forward showed exactly what United have lacked going forward this season: pace, that fearless spirit to push the opposition defensive line back and cause them numerous problems.

Matty Cash was likely the most relieved man in the west midlands when he saw Sancho come on for Elanga after 79 minutes at Villa Park.

Shortly afterwards you could easily understand his relief given Sancho's showing.

His performance looked timid and he came off the bench seemingly stone cold - perhaps Jamie Redknapp said it best when he stated that the 21-year-old looks a 'shadow of the former player' he once was at Borussia Dortmund.

Rashford may have also received the wake up call he needed last night watching on from home.

A performance of that maturity from Elanga at such a young age showed the England international that he is no shoe-in to start for this club when he returns from injury.

Ralf Rangnick refused to be drawn on whether the Swede was ahead of Sancho in the pecking order at Old Trafford now, but do not be surprised if either Sancho or Rashford will be watching the youngster flourish from the bench on Wednesday night against Brentford.

The 19-year-old has laid down a marker.
