Anthony Davis to undergo MRI on Sunday to look at sprained thumb

The Los Angeles Lakers will not know until Monday about the full extent of the thumb injury suffered on Saturday by Anthony Davis in China, but the early indications are slightly encouraging.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on Saturday that the Lakers will have Davis undergo an MRI on his right thumb when the team gets back to the United States. And a positive early indications is that he did not suffer any ligament damage. Obviously that’s a good sign for the Lakers and Davis, however, they were unable to look at x-rays in China and they are currently on their way back to Los Angeles right now.

So while the indications seem to be good, we won’t yet know the extent of the injury for a few days. The Lakers also somehow have a game scheduled for Monday in Los Angeles after flying back to China, but it seems like a safe bet that at least Anthony Davis won’t be playing in that game against the Golden State Warriors.

If Davis is good to return, it will be interesting to see how head coach Frank Vogel approaches his role after Davis got hurt after starting at center but the Lakers did outscore the Nets during his time on the floor.
