Anthony Chisholm dead: Oz and Chi-Raq film star dies aged 77

Screen and Broadway stage actor Anthony Chisholm has died this week at the age of 77.

Anthony, who starred in Spike Lee's film Chi-Raq and trod the boards on Broadway for decades, died on Friday, with his management agency The Katz Company confirming the sad news last night.

His many Broadway successes included his roles in Two Trains Running and Jitney, along with his work as Elder Joseph Barlow in the playwright August Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle play series Radio Golf, for which Anthony received a Tony nomination.

He also received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Burr Redding in the HBO crime series Oz over three series.

As well as his stage and small screen work, Anthony also branched out into film and featured in the 2007 Adam Sandler comedy Reign Over Me, alongside Don Cheadle.

He was hired for Spike Lee's Chi-Raq in 2015 and also appeared in the Zach Braff-directed Going In Style, opposite Michael Caine.

Anthony's final film credit was in The Dark Side Of The Street.

He credited his mother with his creative career, one telling Broadway World: "My mom, rest her soul, was an unpublished novelist and wrote a lot of poetry. She taught me as a toddler the appreciation of the spoken word."

Anthony fought in Vietnam before launching his acting career, becoming a platoon leader in the US Army.

He leaves behind his son Alexander, daughter Che and his grandchildren Ravi and Avani.

His cause of death has not yet been made public.
