Ant infestations rising rapidly in Dublin due to climate change, say experts

Ant infestations are growing across Ireland, with most of the swarms focused on the capital.

Rentokill has recorded a 74% increase in callouts from January to February 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, with the biggest increase in Dublin.

They also reported a 35% increase in early 2019 compared to 2018.

Dublin accounted for 43% of all ant issues for the pest control provider this year.

The company feels climate change is a key factor in the rise in infestations, as the ants thrive and multiply in milder conditions.

Consultant for Rentokil, Richard Faulkner said: “Rentokil typically receives the majority of its callouts for ants during summertime. However, progressively milder winters are resulting in increased callout levels earlier in the year.

"A small ant problem can quickly become a much larger one. If they find a food source, the insects lay down a pheromone trail which attracts other
ants to the area."

Rentokill suggests people take steps to prevent the rise of ants in your home or workplace, by cleaning up food spillages and crumbs immediately, storing food in airtight containers and blocking off cracks near doors and window frames to prevent ants from entering.
