Ant and Dec quash accusations Britain's Got Talent 'ignored' coronavirus by filming auditions

Ant and Dec have quashed any accusations that Britain's Got Talent 'ignored' the coronavirus outbreak to film its new series.

Just like it has done in years gone by, BGT returned for Easter weekend, in spite of everything that's going on in the world at the moment due to the global pandemic.

Over the past few weeks, a number of ITV shows have been affected by the outbreak, with production halted on Lorraine, Loose Women, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Over on BBC, Little Mix's new talent show The Search has been postponed but BGT was back on Saturday with its new series.

And before we got to see any of this year's acts in action, Ant and Dec appeared on screen to say: "We just want to assure you that everything you're about to see was filmed earlier this year in January and February.

"From everyone at BGT and our sponsor at M&S Food, we hope that tonight's show puts a smile on your face."

Viewers watching at home said that seeing a theatre full of people watching the auditions made them realise how much we took things like that for granted before coronavirus.

One tweeted: "Is it just me or is it now strange seeing people close even thought this was filmed before all this," and another reacted: "Trying to decide whether I have anxiety because there's no social distancing or elation because there's no social distancing."

While BGT 2020's auditions will air as planned, it has already been confirmed that the live semi finals and final have been postponed until later in the year.

A statement from ITV said: “We have been working with the brilliant production teams at Thames and Syco to find a way of making the live finals work, which were due to be broadcast at the end of May.

“However, in light of the latest government health guidelines and in line with our priority of safeguarding the wellbeing of everyone involved in our programmes, production of the live shows cannot go ahead as planned.

"The live finals will therefore be broadcast later in the year.”
