Ant and Dec realised they were 'happiest together' amid fears partnership was over

Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly have revealed it was realising they were happiest being and working together that led to their reunion, after Ant's TV break.

Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity host Ant stepped down from all TV commitments in 2018 after a drink-driving conviction, with him entering rehab to battle his drink and drug addiction.

Ant has been honest about his demons, with him getting his life back on track last year and returning to TV hosting duties with co-star and best pal Dec.

But there was a time where they both were unsure if Ant would return to TV, or if they'd ever work together again.

Speaking on The One Show ahead of the release of their new book Once Upon A Tyne, going over the past 30 years of their career, the pair revealed all about what brought them back together.

Dec called it a difficult time for both of them, as they separately went away and tried to decide what the future held.

But ultimately, they realised they needed each other, and that they were "happiest" when together.

It was this realisation that led to Ant's return to the TV partnership, with the pair reuniting as a much-loved duo on their normal shows.

Dec explained: "It was an incredibly difficult time, and for me I just wanted to fulfil our obligations. I wanted to do the TV shows and keep them going.

"When the time was right we knew we would sit down together and decide what the future was going to hold for us both."

Dec went on: "It really was an uncertain time, both of us individually went away and thought about what the future could hold, would hold... ultimately at the end of it all we sat down together under the glare of everything.

"We were very honest with each other and we both realised what made us happiest was being together and working together."

Ant agreed, adding: "I just had to get myself right and then I did, and we spoke a lot as friends, forgetting the carer.

"We decided the best thing to do was to get happy, get well and come back when I was better, and that is what we did."

On fearing they wouldn't reunite in their career, Dec said: "Absolutely, yeah, we both did. We were very unsure what tomorrow would bring.

"I didnt know if Ant was gonna come back from his period away and say, 'I wanna be a pig farmer in Wales'. I didn't know... none of us knew what the future would hold."

The One Show airs weeknights at 7pm on BBC One.
