Ant and Dec feared Coronation invite was a revenge 'wind up' as TV stars witness historic moment

Ant and Dec were left convinced that their invite to King Charles III's Coronation was a 'wind up' as an act of revenge for their very public pranks on famous faces over the years.

The TV hosts were among the stars to take their seats in Westminster Abbey on Saturday to witness the new monarch's historic moment, with the likes of Katy Perry and Andrew Lloyd Webber joining them. The Geordie duo were interviewed on Good Morning Britain as they prepared to head into the service and it was then that they admitted they initially thought someone was having a laugh at their expense when their Coronation invite arrived.

Dec explained: "It's quite surreal when the invite comes through and it's quite an ornate invite and it comes through the door and you think, 'hang on a minute, is it finally our time to get wound up?' Is someone having us on here because this is a really good wind up' and no, apparently it was true and here we are!"

But, far from being a wind up, Ant and Dec's attendance at King Charles III's Coronation, after years of being proud ambassadors for The Prince's Trust was documented on the Royal Family's website, on a post which read: "Award-winning presenters Anthony McPartlin OBE and Declan Donnelly OBE have supported The Prince's Trust for more than twenty years. In 2016, they fronted a special programme with His Majesty The King, then The Prince of Wales, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the youth charity."

Ant and Dec had a brief interview with ITV after leaving the Abbey, with Dec saying it was a day "they'll never forget," as Ant, when asked what the 'best moment' was, replying: "When the crown went on, it's got to be!"
