Ant and Dec defend Boy George over 'toxic' allegations amid I'm A Celebrity backlash

I'm A Celeb hosts Ant and Dec have been forced to defend Boy George after his upfront and direct behaviour has earned him a 'toxic' label.

The pop legend has not been afraid to speak his mind during his time on the ITV show, and not everyone is a fan.

He made it clear to MP Matt Hancock how he felt about the former health secretary's actions during the pandemic, before speaking to comedian Seann Walsh and criticising camp by labelling it 'The Brady Brunch'.

The 62-year-old musician also claimed people 'weren't being themselves' in camp, leading to viewers becoming irked at his complaints and moans.

In last night's episode, Boy George shared that he felt like they are not "being themselves" as he watched them play a game of What's The Time Mr Wolf.

Speaking to Seann Walsh, Boy George called his campmates "The Brady Bunch". However Seann replied: "I'd rather be The Brady Bunch than there be conflict."

Boy George replied bluntly: "People aren't being themselves and I see it."

After the episode aired on ITV, Ant and Dec went live on Instagram to dissect the episode including Boy George's comments.

One viewer accused Boy George of "causing drama". However, Ant and Dec explained: "You like drama. That's the whole point."

Ant added: "I like the fact George is very set in his ways and he's not going to pretend to be somebody is not.

"He's his authentic self and that's good."

Another viewer also thought Boy George was out for trouble, but Ant defended the Karma Chameleon singer as he said: "I don't think he does. He thinks some people in there are fake."

Dec added: "I don't think he is two-faced. He's telling everyone what he's thinking. He told Matt what he thought.

"It took a little while but he did."

In an earlier episode, Boy George had a confrontation with Matt Hancock in camp after he accused the MP of giving him "funny looks".

The harsh words happened as Boy George confessed to Seann Walsh: "Can’t stand Matt. I have tried to like him and I’ve failed.

"I find him slimy, I find him slippery. I find him just… I made a joke about chocolate. He just looked at me like…

"I wanted to say, 'What are you looking at? Don’t you look at me like that.'"

Boy George added: "I’ve tried to separate what I feel about him from who he is as a person, but I can’t."

With Matt coming into view, Boy George rounded on him to let his true feelings be known. He said: "I was making a joke about the chocolate. For god’s sake I was like… let’s have a bit of fun. I didn’t like the way you looked at me. I made a joke and you were like…"

He continued: "I just feel everyone’s trying to be too nice. It’s getting on my t**s. I don’t want arguments… I’m just like come on guys, have a laugh."

As the conversation continued, Boy George added: "I have been hating on you, I have to be honest. I sometimes feel like you don’t say what you mean and you’re not particularly direct."

“I’m trying to separate you as a human being and you as a politician and I’m struggling with it. We don’t share the same politics."

The honest chat didn't stop there, as Boy George continued to tell Matt how he felt before issuing an apology. He confessed: "I am struggling a little bit with you. That’s not your problem, that’s my problem. I apologise because I was really sl**ging you off a minute ago."

In the Bush Telegraph, Boy George said the chat made him feel like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Speaking direct to camera, he said: "It feels like a relief to me. I don’t want to come out of here and feel like I’ve been dishonest'. I had to be truthful."
