Another year group sent to self-isolate as end of term nears

Another whole group of pupils has been sent home to self isolate and learn remotely after a Covid case.

All year nine pupils at Ysgol Penweddig in Aberystwyth were told to seld self-isolate on Thursday for a possible 10 days after a Covid case at the school was confirmed, Ceredigion Council said.

In addition, pupils travelling on two buses have also been contacted and asked to self-isolate for 10 days again. These pupils come from more than one year group from Ysgol Penweddig.

Term ends on Friday July 16 for most maintained schools, including those in Aberystwyth, according to the Ceredigion Council school dates information online.

Schools are being urged to try not to send pupils home en mass to self isolate if there is one case in their contact bubble. It is up to Track, Trace and Protect to decide who are close contacts but headteachers have said they have to follow public health rules from Welsh Government. You can read about that here

Ceredigion Contact Tracing Team is now trying to identify close contacts of the positive case.

Pupils will be informed whether they can return to school as soon as possible, or not.

The council would not say how many pupils are affected, only that it was the whole year nine group plus those on two school buses.

Ceredigion Council said in a statement:“All confirmed contacts of the positive case must remain at home for 10 days to reduce the possible spread of the virus to family, friends and the wider community. The pupils will be taught remotely for this period.”.

The council is urging parents to book a Covid test “if their children feel generally feeling unwell and have a history of being in contact with a known Covid-19 case”.
