More US newspaper retrenchment. The San Jose Mercury News is to cut more than 8% of its work force, totalling 101 employees, by December 19. Forty jobs will go in the newsroom. "I'm sorry to have to stand before you today, again, with some bad news,'' executive editor Susan Goldberg told staff, adding: "The economics of our industry continue to slide downward." The paper is owned by MediaNews, a Denver-based group. (Declaration of interest: I have written for the Mercury News). (Via San Jose Mercury News)
