Another UK 'fireball' meteor spotted in night sky one week after 'sonic boom' over South West

Two 'fireball' meteors have been spotted in the UK in consecutive weeks.

It's believed last Sunday's (February 28) huge space object crash landed just north of Cheltenham, after a 'sonic boom noise' was reported across the South West.

Tonight (Monday, March 8) stargazers spotted another meteor in the skies above Sheffield.

Virtual Astro tweeted at 6:50pm: "Large fireball spotted over the UK 10 minutes ago."

One person replied: "Just seen an amazing shooting star/meteor over Sheffield, heading North. Completely stunning and so bright."

Last week, hundreds of people took to social media to share videos and pictures of the fireball over the West Country - with many being disturbed by what was described as a ‘sonic boom’ as the meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

In the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire one woman said: “Scared all the pheasants out of the forest but a few moments before hand my partner said that were a strange light outside.”

Meanwhile Thomas Page in Bristol tweeted: “Did anyone just hear a dull boom? Almost like a sonic boom?”

In Someset Wayne Hand said he'd seen a "massive meteoroid over Chilcompton" as he was putting the bins out "and it lit up the sky".

Sightings of the meteor falling from the sky were reported in London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Bath, Liverpool and Devon and Cornwall.
