Another surge of coronavirus cases as Bristol records two deaths

Bristol and its surrounding areas have recorded more than 100 new coronavirus cases for the fifth day running.

According to data released by Public Health England yesterday (October 7), 135 people were diagnosed with the virus in a single day across the Bristol region.

The figures came on the same day the first Covid-related deaths in the city have been reported for two weeks.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows one death was in hospital, and one was in a care home.

Bristol recorded 74 new cases. That brings our city's total to 2,166 people diagnosed with the virus since the start of the pandemic.

While South Gloucestershire saw a rise of 30, bringing its total to 1,198.

And North Somerset recorded 18 more positive lab tests, its total is 1,235.

Bath and North East Somerset reported a jump of 13, the total there now stands at 679.

Nationally, 14,162 positive tests were recorded, bringing the nation's total to 544,275.

And 70 more coronavirus-related hospital deaths were reported. Across the UK, there have now been 42,515 deaths.

Active cases

Heatmaps tracking Covid-19 across the Bristol region show there are nearly 1,800 active cases in the area.

As of 5am on Tuesday morning (October 6), there were estimated to be 1,780 active cases across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.
