Another surge in Covid-19 deaths across Nottingham's hospitals

Fifteen more people have died in Nottingham's hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus, the hospital trust has confirmed.

Nottingham University Hospitals put out a statement on April 8 confirming the deaths, which take the total coronavirus fatalities across Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital to 68.

The trust has confirmed that all patients were aged between 45 and 90 years old, and died between Saturday, April 4, to Tuesday, April 7.

Dr Keith Girling, Medical Director at Nottingham University Hospitals, said: “Sadly we can confirm that a further 15 patients have died having tested positive for Covid-19.

"Regrettably that means that 68 Covid-19 positive patients we were caring for have sadly died since the beginning of March.

"The patients were aged 45 and 90, and died between April 4 and April 7.

“The families have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time."

It comes as the UK registered its highest single-day rise in deaths on Wednesday, with 936 people dying in the 24-hour period to 5pm on April 7 - including 828 in England.

It takes the total number of deaths in the UK to 7,172, with England recording the most total deaths at 6,483 followed by Scotland (366), Wales (245) and Northern Ireland (78).

Of the 828 new deaths in England, the youngest victim was just 22, the oldest was 103, and 46 of the patients had no known underlying health conditions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson remained in intensive care at a London hospital, where he was said to be in “good spirits” and responding to treatment.
