Sunderlsnd maintained their unbeaten pre-season record, but could have won at York, instead settling for a 1-1 draw.
Sunderland lost Lynden Gooch to injury midway through the first half, Jack Diamond replacing.
And after bossing the opening stages, they took the lead when Aiden McGeady found himself with space inside the box on the left. He picked out Dan Neil in the centre with a low pass, who applied the first-time finish from around 10 yards out.

The Black Cats could have been further ahead through chances for Corry and McGeady, but were rocked in the second half by a York goal against the run of play.
A home free-kick from the right was headed against the post and bounced across the face of goal where Kurt Willoughby lashed the ball home.
Benji Kimpioka had the chance to win the game from the penalty spot late on, but missed form 12 yards.
