Another steep rise in Bristol coronavirus cases as UK records highest ever daily increase

The Bristol region saw another steep rise in people being diagnosed with coronavirus over the past 24 hours, according to the latest figures.

A total of 42 cases were confirmed in all four areas today (Tuesday, September 29) - more than double compared to yesterday's 16.

Bristol reported the biggest rise with 20 more positive lab tests being returned. That brings the city's total to 1,836 since the start of the pandemic.

While ten more were recorded in South Gloucestershire, the total there stands at 1,016.

Bath and North East Somerset saw a rise of eight, its total is now 539.

And North Somerset reported a jump of four, bringing the district's total to 1,135.

UK-wide, there have been 7,143 new cases recorded in the most recent 24-hour period. That is the highest ever daily rise in new infections since the start of the pandemic, and brings the nation's total to 439,013.

Covid deaths

Across Britain, 71 coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded today.

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a new death over the past 24 hours, so the number of deaths remains at 271.

Southmead Hospital reported a coronavirus -related death on Tuesday August 25, which was the first in the city for two months.
