One of the immediate reactions to the pairing of Will Fuller and Brandin Cooks is that the Houston Texans’ receiving corps will feature top-end speed.
Separation is the biggest key to executing the deep ball. The second key is accuracy, and a statistic produced by Pro Football Focus indicates the Texans have that component already in their passing game.
According to PFF, quarterback Deshaun Watson had the fourth-most completions over 30 yards in the past two seasons with 47. Only Patrick Mahomes had the most with 59 and then Dak Prescott and Aaron Rodgers tied for second-most with 48 apiece.
The Texans have the speed and the accuracy.
The biggest question mark surrounding the Texans’ passing game isn’t even so much the effectiveness as it is the availability. Fuller has never played a full 16-game season since Houston drafted him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Furthermore, Cooks’ concussions in 2019 kept him out of two games.
“There’s a lot of speed on this offense already,” Cooks told reporters on April 30. “Usually I can say that, but you’ve got guys that are able to blow the top off from every single position in this offense.”
The Texans have all of the pieces to have a deep threat offense if the availability of its skill positions is at a high level.
