Another starting QB on the move as Eagles trade Carson Wentz to Colts

The second big QB trade of the 2021 offseason has dropped. The first was the Lions and Rams making a deal that sent Matthew Stafford to the Rams for two future first-round picks and QB Jared Goff. We knew at that time it was just the ice breaker for big QB trades and the next one has gone down with the Eagles sending former top pick Carson Wentz to Indianapolis.

This one wasn’t the blockbuster that the Stafford trade was. Mainly because Stafford is still viewed as a surefire starting QB while the Eagles had made no secret they wanted to deal Wentz and hand the reins over to 2020 second-round pick Jalen Hurts.

Wentz was the Eagles pick at second overall in the 2016 draft. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017, leading the Eagles to an 11-2 record. Then he went out with injury while backup Nick Foles would finish the deal to help the Eagles win the Super Bowl.

It was just a season ago that Wentz threw for over 4000 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions and the Eagles went 9-7. But he regressed to throw just 16 TDs to 15 INT last season and the Eagles decided they were ready to move on.

Presumably, this also means the Colts will no longer be in the market for a quarterback, which also changes the landscape of the market and taking them out of the running for the likes of Deshaun Watson who still figures to be the biggest name QB who could switch teams as he has yet to back down from his trade demands.
