Another spike in Bristol's coronavirus cases

A further 66 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Bristol over the past 24 hours.

According to the latest data (October 12), 2,540 people have been diagnosed with the virus since the start of the pandemic.

And over the past seven days, 490 positive lab tests have been recorded in Bristol.

While almost 400 students at the University of Bristol have now contracted coronavirus, after another rapid surge in infections.

South Gloucestershire has recorded 1,348 cases since the start of the pandemic. That's 80 further cases since Friday.

Bath and North East Somerset reported a jump of 75 since Friday, the total there now stands at 819.

And North Somerset recorded 33 cases in three days, its total is 1,302.

UK-wide, 13,972 new Covid cases were confirmed today. That brings our nation's total to 617,688.

Fifty further UK deaths were also reported over the past 24 hours, bringing our UK total to 42,875.

Three-tiered system

The figures come on the same day that Boris Johnson has announced a new three-tiered lockdown system.

In the worst-hit areas, which is currently Merseyside, pubs, gyms, leisure centres, betting shops, adult gaming centres and casinos will close.
