Another senior WA tourism official set to exit as Opposition hits out at 'chaos'

Rob Delane was only appointed to his current tourism position in July.

Another senior bureaucrat from the WA Government's tourism super department is on the way out, with the Opposition describing the situation as "chaos".

After queries from the ABC, the Government confirmed Rob Delane will next month "cease" to be the deputy director-general of International Education, Trade and Investment in the super department.

The Government is already trying to find a new person to permanently lead the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, after it sacked Stephen Wood earlier this year.

Labor had hand-picked Mr Wood to head up the super department it created on winning office.

Mr Delane was only appointed to the deputy director-general role in July.

The Government confirmed his specific role would no longer continue, with the portfolio responsibilities — all a key focus of the Government's election pitch — to be reallocated.

It is unclear what role, if any, Mr Delane will now move to in the WA public service.

A spokeswoman for Premier Mark McGowan said "discussions between Mr Delane and his employing authority, the Public Sector Commissioner regarding his ongoing employment, [are continuing]".

Tourism 'falling off a cliff': Opposition

Acting Opposition Leader Liza Harvey said the tourism super department was in "chaos" and she was worried about the message it was sending to the public service.

"The Government's got a big problem here," Ms Harvey said.

"It seems to have a personality issue with the senior people in the public sector and they need to get on top of it.

"Tourism's falling off a cliff and we've got the worst performance for international student numbers, which is a result of this Government's decision."

Mrs Harvey said she hoped Mr Delane would not end up being another senior bureaucrat forced out by the Government who got a large taxpayer-funded compensation payment.

Since winning last year's state election, and as part of its machinery-of-government changes, the McGowan Government has sacked a number of senior bureaucrats.

Gwyn Dolphin was dumped as Tourism WA chief executive officer last year and received a $375,000 payout.

Mr Wood was later appointed director-general of the newly-created Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, and the Government also controversially made him Tourism WA CEO as well as part of its machinery-of-government changes.

Mr Wood was then sacked in April and received an almost $500,000 compensation payment.

Transport chief executive officer Richard Sellers was seconded to fill in as the director-general for three months.

More 'restructuring' planned: Government

Since Mr Dolphin was sacked, the Opposition has repeatedly called for the Government to appoint a dedicated CEO to Tourism WA.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Mr McGowan said Mr Delane would finish up in his role at the end of August.

"Restructuring within the department has seen a new role of managing director [of] Tourism WA being established as part of the Government's plans to elevate tourism, diversify the economy and create jobs," she said.

"A recruitment process is underway and an appointment is anticipated next month.

"Further restructuring is expected with international education, trade and investment responsibilities to be reallocated."
