Another person dies from Covid-19 in Bristol areas as hundreds more cases are found

Another person has died from coronavirus in the Bristol area at the same time as more than 500 new cases were recorded across the region.

The death occurred in South Gloucestershire, where there has now been 357 deaths caused by the virus.

It means 1,409 people have died from coronavirus in the Bristol area since the start of the pandemic.

Today's update, published by Public Health England on August 17, also showed there had been another 517 cases of the virus recorded in the region in the last 24 hours.

Bristol recorded the highest number of new cases, after 237 were found in the city.

A further 126 were found in South Gloucestershire, 86 in Bath and North East Somerset, and 68 in North Somerset.

There has now been 106,374 confirmed cases of the virus in the region since the start of the pandemic.

The Government has said a further 170 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, bringing the UK total to 131,149.

This is the highest number of daily reported deaths since March 12, when 175 were reported.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 156,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

As of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 26,852 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK, the Government said.

Government data up to August 16 shows that of the 88,211,389 Covid jabs given in the UK, 47,369,418 were first doses, a rise of 35,716 on the previous day.

Some 40,841,971 were second doses, an increase of 138,390.

The total number of cases confirmed in each region around Bristol, with the daily rise in brackets, are as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 50,844 (+237)
  • North Somerset - 15,831 (+68)
  • South Gloucestershire - 25,430 (+126)
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 14,269 (+86)

  • North Somerset - 322 (-)
  • South Gloucestershire - 357 (+1)
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 230 (-)
