Another npower shambles as it chases me for a bill from 2012

Can you believe that I am being chased for a bill by npower that stems from a house I rented in 2012.

When we moved in we immediately switched to British Gas. The previous tenants had not given exit readings and, as a result, an accurate closing bill could not be calculated.

After much, much back and forth, npower agreed that this was not our problem and I received written confirmation that we did not owe any money. Since then, I have been bombarded with letters demanding money and threatening debt collectors. Every time I patiently ring npower and explain the situation again, and again, and again, and again. Please help. RB, London

Another npower shambles. Contrary to the letter it sent you, it claimed to us that you did owe £234 for the six weeks or so that it took for your switch to British Gas to go through.

However, to apologise for the harassment and general aggravation npower has agreed to write this money off and end the letters. It says it has not put any negative information on your credit report, but we would advise you to check to be sure.

We welcome letters but cannot answer individually. Email us at consumer.champions@theguardian.com or write to Consumer Champions, Money, The Guardian, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU. Please include a daytime phone number
