SAMUT PRAKAN: An elderly couple on a motorcyle were injured when they drove into a length of phone cable hanging low over the road and crashed to the ground in Muang district on Thursday morning.

Jiak Thipsumontha, 69, told the media that he and his wife Sujitra Tojaeng, 59, had left their home in Soi Boonsiri in tambon Bang Muang on the way to sell fried bananas at the mouth of nearby Soi Yusuk 30.

As they were passing Soi Yusuk 10, Mr Jiak said, he became entangled in a sagging telephone cable,  hanging low across the road from a power pole, causing him to lose control and the motorcycle fell to the ground,

Mr Jiak said he was knocked unconscious. Passers-by came to his assistance.

He had a fracture in the right eye socket, injuries to his nose and mouth and abrasions. His wife was also hurt.

It would have been worse if he had been travelling fast, or if the wire had tangled around his neck, he said.

He did know which company the cable belonged to.

He filed a complaint with police asking them to take action against the cable's owner. A three-metre long piece of the cable from the scene of the accident was given to police as evidence.

Mr Jiak and Mrs Sujitra show their wounds.
