Another Liverpool pub to be turned into flats after planning permission granted

A Liverpool pub is set to be redeveloped as flats in another example of former drinking establishments in the city being turned into housing.

An updated proposal from JD Estates to turn the former Ash Grove pub, in Picton Road, in Wavertree, into four flats was granted by the council recently.

It is a slight modification on similar proposals submitted last year.

The conversion of pubs into homes in Liverpool and the UK more widely has been a growing trend in recent years.

The economic outlook for pubs themselves continues to decline, with the total number dropping year on year.

However, they often occupy attractive buildings in fairly desirable locations within residential areas, making them appealing to housing developers.

A report submitted with the application to convert the Ash Grove pub says: "The pub is already a four-storey tall being over 12 metres in height, the ceiling heights throughout are far above a required standard for residential purposes and therefore this application proposes some adjustment to floor levels to make use of existing window openings.

"The entrance to the building is currently on the side (on the long elevation facing Picton Crescent) and we propose to re-use this entrance to locate a central stair which conveniently sits between existing windows.

"This will allow the accommodation to be positioned both sides of the stair which can be accessed by a linear corridor on the blank elevation side.

"We feel the lounges and kitchens should be positioned on the Picton Road frontage to enjoy two aspects using existing windows on the front and side, all bedrooms then face on to Picton Crescent."
