Another lay day for Rottnest surf event

Organisers have again been forced to call a lay day at the WSL event at Rottnest Island off Perth. (AAP)

A second straight lay day has been called for the Rottnest Search WSL surf event in Western Australia, but organisers are hopeful of better conditions on Thursday.

When action resumes, Australian surf stars Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons, and Tyler Wright will be among the competitors in action in the women's round of 16.

The men's round of 32 features stars such as Gabriel Medina, Jordy Smith, Julian Wilson, Filipe Toledo, Owen Wright, and Italo Ferreira.

"The waves haven't quite shown up just yet and the wind is still blowing on-shore," WSL senior vice-president of tours Jessi Miley-Dyer said.

"When we arrived this morning there wasn't much on offer, so we went on hold for a few hours hoping the forecasted swell would arrive, but the conditions are not ideal, so we are going to call it off for the day.

"Thursday is looking pretty promising."

Taj Burrow's one-off comeback was short lived, with the 42-year-old eliminated in straight sets.

Margaret River Pro champion Tatiana Weston-Webb was also eliminated in the second round after finishing last in her three-woman heat.
