Another hit & run: Speeding SUV kills woman cop in Lucknow

LUCKNOW: In yet another hit-and-run case, a speeding SUV hit a woman constable of UP Special Zone Security Battalion while she was on duty in Gomtinagar on Wednesday.

An FIR was registered on Thursday but the driver was not arrested. The deceased was identified as Rampati Rathore (48) of Lakhimpur Kheri district.

Her daughter Pushpa, a constable in the same unit, provided the registration number of the red SUV.

This is the third hitand-run incident in the past one month in posh Gomtinagar.

Rathore was deputed at the statues of Birsa Munda and Narayan Guru at Bhagidari Bhawan road. Around 7.40pm on Wednesday, a speeding red SUV coming from the underpass hit her.

“She was thrown up in the air due to the impact. She suffered head injuries and fractured her limbs. She was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where she was declared brought dead,” said Pushpa.

The deceased’s son-inlaw Neeraj told TOI that despite providing registration number of the vehicle, police have not been able to trace it. “Our case was registered only after we informed senior police officials,” he said.

Meanwhile, locals said the underpass is becoming a ‘black spot’, as vehicles come from both directions, Shaheed Path and Samtamulak crossing. There are no rumble strips or barricading to slow down the vehicles ,” said a local.

Gomtinagar SHO KK Tiwari said an FIR on charges of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered against the unidentified driver.
