What’s new: A deputy head of the National Energy Administration (NEA) is being investigated on suspicion of “serious violations of party discipline and law,” the Communist Party’s anti-graft body announced Saturday.
Liu Baohua, 57, joined the NEA in 2013 and was promoted to be its deputy head in August 2017. He had previously served as director of the market supervision department of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, a body that was later merged with the NEA in 2013.
What’s the background: The NEA has long been troubled by corruption. In December, Nur Bekri, a former head of the agency, was sentenced to life in prison for taking 79.1 million yuan ($11.8 million) in bribes.
In 2014, another former NEA director, Liu Tienan, was sentenced to life in prison for taking 35.6 million yuan in bribes.
