Another grim coronavirus milestone has nearly been reached in Greater Manchester

Almost 2,000 people have now died at Greater Manchester's hospitals having contracted coronavirus.

Four more COVID-19 deaths were recorded on Friday (June 19), bringing the region's total to 1,999, NHS figures show.

Those figures do not include deaths in the community, such as care homes, so the true number is likely to be far greater.

On Friday Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust; Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust; Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust; and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust each recorded one more death.

The Royal Bolton Hospital has recorded no new deaths for more than six days running.

The total number of coronavirus deaths at hospital trusts in Greater Manchester as of Friday, June 18 is:

  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 221
  • Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust - 9
  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 412
  • NHS Nightingale North West - 6
  • Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - 523
  • Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust - 6
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust - 175
  • Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 203
  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - 182
  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust - 13
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 249

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 42,461 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Thursday, up by 173 from 42,288 the day before.

The Government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which is thought to have passed 53,000.

The DHSC also said in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Friday, 169,600 tests were carried out or dispatched, with 1,346 positive results.

Overall, a total of 7,433,114 tests have been carried out and 301,815 cases have been confirmed positive.

The figure for the number of people tested has been 'temporarily paused to ensure consistent reporting' across all methods of testing.
