Another gift from Trump? Washington to recognise Israel's West Bank settlements

THE DEBATE FRANCE 24

Is it the final sprint for Benjamin Netanyahu's rival in his bid to form a government and unseat a mainstay of Israeli politics for more than a quarter-century? Benny Gantz is trying to court as many of the smaller parties as possible to get a deal ahead of a Wednesday deadline.

The same Trump administration which moved its embassy to Jerusalem and recognized the annexation of the Golan Heights is once again breaking with the rest of the international community and - according to critics - hammering another nail in the coffin of a two-state solution for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

We ask our panel what the US recognition of those Jewish settlements actually changes. A recognition of facts on ground or a nod to hardliners to buy and/or seize more Palestinian land? To answer that question, we need to ask why the settlers moved there in the first place.

Then there is the calculus in Washington, why Trump even in the middle of an impeachment battle still has time to fight for Bibi. Will Monday's announcement actually tip the scales in favour of Netanyahu against Benny Gantz, who as former army chief of staff can hardly be branded a dove? What happens now and in the long run?

Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Juliette Laurain and Jimena Morales-Velasco.
