Coronavirus: 14 die at one Bristol hospital - these are the latest figures

Eight more people have died with coronavirus in Bristol, according to the latest NHS England figures.

A total of 14 people have died at sites managed by the University Hospitals Bristol Trust – which runs the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) – as of Thursday, April 2.

That figure is up from the six who had died at the trust's sites as of Tuesday.

It comes after Portishead comedian Eddie Large, real name Edward McGinnis, died this morning in Southmead Hospital. His death has not yet been accounted for in the latest figures.

The death toll at Bath's Royal United Hospital is 16 – up from the 10 in the figures from Tuesday – and remains at two in Weston General Hospital.

Across the South West, the total number of deaths is 134.

This figure includes Bristol-based bus driver Martin Egan, whose death was confirmed by First Bus on Sunday.

Other coronavirus deaths in the area include a 94-year-old man who passed away at Weston General Hospital and retired police officer Nick Matthews who died in Bristol Royal Infirmary on Saturday, March 14.

The 59-year-old, who had underlying health issues, died shortly after returning from a holiday in the Canary Islands.

There were 117 confirmed cases of infected people in Bristol as of the latest figures, at 9am on April 1.

Cases have also increased in surrounding areas. In South Gloucestershire, there are now 76 positive tests, an increase of 10.

In North Somerset some 42 people have tested positive, up by two.

The UK's coronavirus death toll has almost reached 3,000, after the biggest rise in a day yet.

A total of 2,921 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Wednesday, the Department of Health said.

That figure is up by 569, from 2,352 the day before.

It beats the previous record rise of 563, which had only been confirmed yesterday.

The Department of Health also said that, as of 9am on Thursday, a total of 163,194 people have been tested of which 33,718 tested positive.

Public Health England said 10,657 tests were carried out in England on Wednesday and testing capacity for inpatient care in England currently stands at 12,799 tests per day.
