Blow for Bristol Rovers as experienced coach announces departure amid reshuffle

Graham Coughlan's restructuring plans for Bristol Rovers have suffered a blow with an experienced coach announcing his departure.

Academy manager Jonny Henderson has left his role after eight years at the Memorial Stadium.

Coughlan had promised changes behind the scenes at the Mem this summer after admitting parts of the club need streamlining, but Henderson will not feature in the new-look staff after stepping down to "pursue other opportunities".

Coughlan told BBC Radio Bristol last week: "I will have to have a staff reshuffle. There are far too many staff at the football club. There are financial restraints there.

"Some members of staff will leave, others will be promoted and others will find new roles. That process has started.

"I'll try and get one or two members of staff in but the size of the staffing will be reduced."

With Graham Coughlan meeting Sheffield United, just who could Bristol Rovers be trying to sign?

Henderson's departure was confirmed on Sunday, with more outgoings expected in the coming week.

Last week it was announced that 10 players were being released by the club, including fan favourites Chris Lines and Stuart Sinclair, as Coughlan begins to mould the club in his vision.

Henderson joined the club in 2011 and rose through the ranks to become academy manager in 2014.

He has overseen the development of the likes of Alfie Kilgour, Deon Moore and Lucas Tomlinson, who could all feasibly break into the first team next season.

Henderson was previously academy manager at Merthyr Town in South Wales before making the move to north Bristol.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Bristol Rovers said: "It is with disappointment that we announce that Jonny Henderson will be stepping down from the role at the end of the season.

"Henderson will leave to pursue other opportunities.

"We would like to place on record our sincerest thanks for his hard work and efforts over the past eight years and we wish him well for whatever the future holds."
