Another Covid patient dies in Bristol region as cases rise sharply

Another person who contracted coronavirus in the Bristol region has died, according to official figures.

The death happened in South Gloucestershire, and takes the district's number of fatalities since the pandemic first hit to 366.

Alongside this, a further 638 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours - a big increase compared to yesterday's figure of 548.

Of these 638 cases, nearly half were in Bristol, with 294 new cases recorded.

North Somerset had the second-highest daily tally with 145 new cases, while Bath and North East Somerset followed with 137 new cases.

South Gloucestershire recorded just 62 new cases in the last 24 hours.

The total number of cases confirmed in each region around Bristol, with the daily rise in brackets, are as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 55,276 (+294)

  • North Somerset - 17,558 (+145)

  • South Gloucestershire - 27,841 (+62)

  • Bath and North East Somerset - 16,043 (+137)

The total number of deaths recorded in each region, with any increase in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 507 (-)

  • North Somerset - 323 (-)

  • South Gloucestershire - 366 (+1)

  • Bath and North East Somerset - 232 (-)

Across the entirety of the UK, a total of 38,154 new cases were recorded bringing the total to 6,862,904 positive tests since the beginning of the pandemic.

A further 178 people died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test in the UK in the last 24 hours as well.

This brings the total number of deaths in the UK to 132,920.
