Another council bin lorry has caught fire after someone put hot ashes in their waste

A council has warned residents after another bin lorry caught fire after someone dumped hot ashes in their waste.

It is the second bin lorry fire in Neath Port Talbot in two months for the same reason.

The latest incident happened at Heol y Nant, Baglan, on the morning of Tuesday, May 26.

According to the council, the driver managed to get the burning rubbish out of the lorry before substantial damage was caused.

The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and arrangements were made for the waste to be removed and the area to be cleaned up.

The first incident happened on Tuesday, March 31, when a freighter was loading waste in the lane behind Beech Street, Aberavon, Port Talbot.

After loading waste into the lorry, the back of it caught on fire. Again, the rubbish was quickly removed and the fire service was called.

Neath Port Talbot Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for Streetscene and engineering, Councillor Ted Latham said: “Following this second, very similar incident, we would respectfully remind residents not to place hot ashes or any similar material in waste, particularly as we are now in barbecue season.”
