Another coronavirus case at Bristol school confirmed - more than 60 pupils self-isolating

More than 60 pupils will have to self-isolate after a pupil at a secondary school tested positive for coronavirus.

Leaders at Fairfield School said they were made aware today (October 7) that a Year 10 student had contracted the virus.

A total of 61 pupils have been identified as close contacts with the teenager. These students will now self-isolate for 14 days.

All other pupils can continue to attend school as normal.

Increased cleaning measures in all communal areas and classrooms have been rolled out.

Principal Nick Lewis said: "We have responded quickly to the advice we have received for the Department of Education and asked 61 Year 10 students to self-isolate for the next 14 days as a result.

"We will continue to follow all our protocols to make sure staff and students are as safe as possible in the current situation."

A number of measures have been introduced across the school to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. These include students wearing masks in communal areas and corridors and frequent hand cleaning throughout the day.

The total number of cases in schools in the Bristol area is creeping closer to 40, and many children are now confined to their homes in case they are carrying the virus.

It is thought the number of pupils combined across those schools, who have had to stay home and self-isolate in case they are infected, is in the high hundreds.
