Another city introduces congestion charge for drivers

  • Oxfordshire County Council has approved a temporary £5 daily congestion charge for car drivers entering six specific areas of Oxford city centre.
  • The scheme is anticipated to begin in November and will remain in effect for a maximum period of two years.
  • Its primary objectives are to reduce traffic congestion, improve bus journey times, enhance cycling safety, and decrease air pollution, partly in response to the Botley Road closure.
  • Certain groups, including community health and care workers, carers, blue badge holders, and residents with valid permits or passes, will be exempt from the charge.
  • The fee will be enforced using automatic number plate recognition cameras, with a £70 fine issued for non-payment.
