Another Chelsea Academy graduate gets senior England call-up as Cobham provides saviour again

Chelsea has more players representing England this international break with 14 players called up all the age groups this international break (Senior to U17s) with many more academy graduates that have left the club like Tammy Abraham, Tino Livramento and Marc Guehi in England.

The time has come. Ring the alarm, wake the family up, scream it at the top of your lungs. Conor Gallagher has been called up to the England senior team for the first time in his career.

Following Emile Smith Rowe’s call-up, I guess this is a moment that Chelsea and Crystal Palace fans have longed for all season.

Though Mason Mount looks to be out of the squad due to injury, it is still a cause for celebration and maybe a warning sign that Chelsea should consider a recall? Wishful thinking, I know.

But just think about it. A Mason Mount and Gallagher straight swap? I need that.

We’ve all raved on about Conor Gallagher’s form so far this season. He has been nothing short of a rising star under Patrick Vieira’s wing. I’ve been wondering how he could possibly get into Chelsea’s first team next season when all this time I should have asked, when will he get his first call up.

Though it is admittedly a little premature, it is well deserved. He is so young in his senior career yet so intelligent with his play. It’s actually quite weird when you think about how far he has come in such a short space of time.

I fancy a Mount, Gallagher link up someday, but of course, we have to wait for another opportunity to see it happen. Mason Mount has dropped out of the England squad with injury. We wish him well and hope the injury is not too damming and he will be back for the next Chelsea match against Leicester.

It’s times like this where I remain conflicted as to whether the Blues should recall the 21-year-old in January or the summer. Or even at all. Playing first-team football, week in week out has bought him to where he is today. If he had stayed at Chelsea, the same opportunity would not have been presented and that is just a fact.

Will Gallagher have been a starter for the Blues? No. Not because he’s not good, but because there’s no space. If Chelsea were to recall him, I’m afraid that his deserved call up will stay as a memory for Gallagher and his progression may be limited.

In other words, let’s keep him on loan for a while, get him a few more England call ups, then give him a call back in about 2 seasons.

Sound fair?

We hope to see Gallagher make an appearance in England’s Monday night match against San Marino. Wishing him good luck and a successful debut when it comes.
