Another busy Bonfire Night for firefighters in Renfrewshire

Firefighters across Renfrewshire had another busy Bonfire Night last night.

Scottish Fire and Rescue responded to more than 50 calls in the 24 hours from midnight on November 4 to midnight on November 5.

In Paisley, fire and rescue staff received 20 calls while Johnstone received 18. Renfrew fire station received 16 over the 24 hours.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in Johnstone stressed that not all of the calls were necessarily for bonfires or fireworks but said it had been a busy night.

There were no reports of any firefighter injuries or any members of the public requiring hospital treatment for injuries caused by fireworks in the Renfrewshire area.

The annual public fireworks display by Renfrewshire Council in Paisley town centre was cancelled this year due to covid. That had led to fears of more people organising informal fireworks events and the possibility of injuries.

A spokesman said: “First and foremost, we would urge all of our communities to follow advice and guidelines around social distancing to help mitigate the spread of Covid-19. This is already a traditionally busy period of the year for ourselves and our partners and it is very important that we maintain an ability to respond to other emergencies.

“We are therefore strongly encouraging anyone who does wish to host a private event to reduce the risk by ensuring to familiarise themselves with our firework code and fire safety guidance.”
