Another big car meet is planned in Bristol just days after Downs rally

Car enthusiasts are planning to converge at another big Bristol meet, just days after police dispersed hundreds of drivers at the Downs.

Crowds of people lined the roads around Clifton Down on Sunday (August 23), after more than 300 people turned up to check out each other's vehicles.

Residents walking at the beauty spot complained of "wheelspins and motor revving," and Avon and Somerset Police will be reviewing its response.

Bristol Live is aware of another Bristol meet being advertised on social media, due to take place on Bank Holiday Monday (August 31).

We have chosen not to disclose the time or location, but it is not expected to be in the same spot as Sunday's meet.

More than 400 people have expressed interest on Facebook in attending, with organisers encouraging a "great turnout".

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Police are aware of social media posts publicising a car meet on Bank Holiday Monday.

"Officers are trying to speak to the organisers to discuss their plans and their safety and social distancing arrangements.

"We're also talking to our partners about how to minimise the potential disruption to the local community and businesses from any such event."

The force has reminded people that gatherings of more than 30 people are still prohibited under coronavirus rules.

The spokesperson added: "If any such event goes ahead officers will be there to engage, explain, encourage and where necessary enforce the legislation.

"Officers will also take action over any anti-social vehicle use or driving offences."

Organisers of the meet have not yet responded to Bristol Live.

Motorists rev their car engines as throngs of people gather at Clifton Downs

Speaking during a Facebook live video yesterday (Wednesday), chief constable Andy Marsh said the force is keen to prevent unlawful raves, car meets and gatherings.

He said: "If you see people setting up or news on the web about a car gathering, a meet, or a music event, tell us.

“We have had a really good response to that and we have mounted an operation every weekend and we will be mounting an operation this weekend to do our very best to prevent them, so the appeal is to do that again."

The police boss said the meet at the Downs was dispersed "within a couple of hours" but admitted that there was some "disruption and damage."

He added: “We would rather have been able to prevent that but we dispersed it as quickly as we could."

He said car meets are a "recurring theme" in Cheddar.

There was a huge meet at Cheddar Gorge over the May bank holiday, which resulted in motorists being fined.

What are the rules?

Northumbria Police shared advice in June for anyone thinking of organising or attending a meet, stressing the need to consider an "appropriate location with land owner’s consent."

People driving safely, legally and considerately would not be penalised by police, the force said.

However, anyone:

  • Driving in a careless or dangerous manner
  • Causing unnecessary noise
  • Acting in an antisocial manner

could see action taken against them with vehicle seizures, fines, dispersal and even arrests if necessary.
