Another 87 vehicles stopped by police on second day of Newport lockdown

Another 87 vehicles were stopped by Gwent Police on the second day of Newport's local lockdown.

The vehicles were stopped on Forge Lane in Newport, near Junction 28 of the M4, on Wednesday, September 23, one day after Newport's local lockdown came into effect.

Gwent Police said officers stopped 81 vehicles on the first day of Newport's lockdown, September 22, close to the boundary between Newport and Cardiff.

It means a total of 168 vehicles were stopped in two days.

Local lockdowns were introduced in Newport, Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend and Blaenau Gwent on Tuesday evening.

A lockdown was also already in place in Caerphilly which has now been extended.

As part of the restrictions, people cannot enter or leave the area under lockdown without a reasonable excuse such as travel for work or education.

WalesOnline asked Gwent Police whether officers issued any fines during the roadside checks on Wednesday and whether the force is continuing the approach that it will not be checking driving licences for addresses.

In response, a Gwent Police spokesperson said: “In total, 87 vehicles were stopped. No fines were handed out and no other issues were reported from the officers involved.

“The focus of the officers was to encourage members of the public to familiarise themselves with the regulations and follow them.

“No further investigations were required into where members of the public stopped had come from on this occasion, as the officers were happy with the people spoken to and their accounts provided.”

She added: “Officers will be out in the community, engaging and encouraging everyone to follow local restrictions which are in place. We’ll be conducting roadside vehicle checks on major and minor arterial routes to explain and engage with the public about the importance of following Welsh Government Covid restrictions.

“It is also important that we ensure that motorists on our roads are using vehicles which are being driven safely and our roadside vehicle checks allow us to catch motorists who are driving illegally on our roads.“
