The number of people to have died with coronavirus in the last 24 hours has risen by more than 600.
The government said a further 613 people have passed away within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Friday (January 1).
Patients were aged between eight and 100-years-old. All except 12 - aged 55 to 90-years-old - had known underlying health conditions.
The date of their deaths ranges from 24 November to 31 December 2020 and their families have been informed.
This brings the UK total to 74,125.
As of 9am on New Year's Day, there had been a further 53,285 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.
This is more than double the amount recorded on December 31 - 26,284 - but less than the 64,000 recorded on Thursday (December 30).
The latest figures bring the total number of cases across the country to 2,542,065.
Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 90,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.
The latest figures come as muted New Year celebrations took place across the country as more than 44 million were instructed to stay home under Tier 4 restrictions.
There are also fears that the pressure being faced by hospitals in London due to the new Covid variant could already be moving across the UK.
It comes as a researcher confirmed transmission of the new coronavirus strain is 'likely to have tripled' even during lockdown.
