Another 610 UK deaths and 30,004 coronavirus cases in 24 hours

Another 610 people in the UK have died within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test, the government said on Sunday, bringing the total in the pandemic to 97,939 deaths.

Separate figures published by the UK's statistic agencies for deaths where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate, together with addition data on deaths that occurred in recent days, show there have now been 114,000 deaths involving the virus in the UK.

The 610 coronavirus-related deaths announced on Sunday brings the number of people to have died in the last seven days to 8,678 (up 10.8 per cent).

And another 30,004 people were confirmed by laboratories to have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

This brings the total number of cases in the UK to 3,647,463.

The number of people who have tested positive in the last seven days is down 22.3 per cent and the total now stands at 251,504.

Latest hospital data from January 20 suggest the number of patients being admitted daily has reached 4,013 (down 6.3 per cent on the previous week).

On vaccinations, the government said of the 6,822,981 people who had received a vaccine dose so far, 6,353,321 people had received a first dose up until January 23 and 469,660 had received a second dose (an increase of 1,043 on figures released the previous day).

Based on the latest figures, an average of 393,031 first doses of vaccine would be needed for the government to meet its target of 15 million first doses by February 15.

Separate data from NHS England showed that 765,617 people in the North West had been given first doses and 63,513 second doses - a total of 829,130 people between December 8 and January 23.

The estimated R number - or reproduction rate - of the virus is between 0.8 and as of January 22 with a daily infection growth rate range of between minus 4 per cent and minus one per cent.
