Another 52 lives have been lost to coronavirus in Greater Manchester - it has now killed at least 331 people in our region

At least 331 people have died at Greater Manchester hospitals having contracting coronavirus.

The region's death toll has spiked by 52 in the last 24 hours - the biggest day-on-day increase of recorded COVID-19 deaths since the outbreak started.

The figures are published daily by NHS England.

Today (Wednesday), further deaths have been announced at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust recorded 11 new coronavirus-related deaths, while Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust announced 10 more.

There were six more deaths at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, seven more at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, six more at Stepping Hill and five more at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

There were seven further deaths recorded at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

The total figures for coronavirus related deaths at Greater Manchester hospitals as of the afternoon April 8

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 46
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 73
Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - 55
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust - 67
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 26
Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - 38
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust - 2
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 24

Some of the larger trusts run several hospitals in Greater Manchester.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust oversees the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford General, while Pennine Acute is in charge of North Manchester General Hospital, Fairfield Hospital, the Royal Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.

The government's figures relate to patients who have died in hospital and do not include deaths in the community, for example in care homes, so the true death toll will be higher.

"Their families have been informed."
